M.I.T.

Gentlemen:

This is to confirm the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory's
invitation to Robert C. Moore to finish his dissertation research
in this Laboratory, and my personal interest serve take part in supervising
his dissertation along with Marvin Minsky.
Assuming our ARPA contract is renewed, which is imminent, we will offer
him a Research Assistantship.

As you probably have already been informed, the matter arises,
because Moore's master's thesis and his proposed doctoral topic
are more along the lines of my interests than along the current
research interests of any of the M.I.T. faculty in artificial
intelligence. Naturally, I have a high regard for his master's thesis
and of his doctoral prospects or I wouldn't get involved in the
matter.
Several other members of our Laboratory find the direction of Moore's
work interesting.

I would be glad to recommend his acceptance as a graduate student
in computer science at Stanford, but I think the proposed arrangement
whereby he will finish his work here and submit the dissertation
to M.I.T. is preferable, because otherwise he would have to fulfill
our somewhat onerous formalities in addition to those he has
already fulfilled at M.I.T.

				Sincerely yours,
